COVID-19 Vaccine Information Distribution (CoVID) Student Task Force

Hey Terps! The COVID-19 vaccine will soon be available on our campus, and the COVID-19 Vaccine Information Distribution (CoVID) Task Force is seeking help from the UMD community to spread credible information about the COVID-19 vaccines.

We are a student organization where members seek to promote vaccine acceptance both in the UMD community and beyond via social media. We primarily use Instagram (@covidstf.umd), and neither a large following nor a public account is necessary to join! Welcome Back from Spring Break! The Math Success Program is OPEN! The Math Success Program offers free, drop-in math coaching and tutoring services for all UMD undergraduate students. Do you have trouble focusing when studying by yourself? Join your fellow Terps on Terp Focus Stream! Created and run by STEP program students in the School of Public Health, Terp Focus Stream is an ongoing series of sessions where you can meet virtually with other students to independently complete schoolwork. Each session is an hour long and they are open to all UMD students. Participants are encouraged to keep their cameras on but there is no obligation to do so. We hope to see you there!

Description:
The Office of the Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer seeks highly motivated and
detail-oriented students to assist with administrative tasks and other projects as assigned. Must
be available to work 20-40 hours/week. This is a paid position.

The Division of Administration plays an integral role in campus operations and contributes greatly to
the community experience at the university. The Vice President oversees Community Engagement;
Environmental Safety, Sustainability, and Risk; Facilities Management; University Human Resources;
Procurement & Business Services; Transportation Services; Public Safety; Emergency Management; and

Projects will be assigned based on qualifications and interests, and may include:
    ● Assisting with business analytics and data management projects, including, but not limited to:
        o Conducting research to support strategic and business planning
        o Preparing reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
        o Interpreting and evaluating research data
    ● Assisting with communications projects, including, but not limited to:
        o Drafting documents, electronic newsletters, and other communications materials
        o Designing posters, flyers, and other outreach materials
        o Supporting ongoing website projects for the division (updating websites via Drupal CMS,
           writing and editing website content, conducting research on website development and
           design, etc.)

    ● Assisting with logistics for meetings and special events
    ●Assisting with special projects related to employee engagement initiatives and more

Qualifications:
Must be a current University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student. A minimum 3.0
cumulative GPA is recommended. All applicants with the requisite skills will be considered;
students with an area of study related to communications, journalism, marketing, business
administration ( information systems, management, operations management, business analytic
and finance) or graphic design are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required:
● Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Attention to detail
● Eager to learn in a professional setting
● Ability to maintain a consistent and reliable schedule
● Discretion, and an understanding of the confidentiality associated with a Vice President’s office

Desired:
● Basic photography skills
● Knowledge or experience with website content management
● Experience with online research
● Familiarity with Microsoft Access, MailChimp, Drupal, InDesign, Premier Pro, and Photoshop a
    plus
● Advanced skills in analytics

MoreWithUs Scholarship Opportunity

The 2021 Summer/Fall Scholarship Competition for high school seniors and college students (see the attached flyer) is now open. This is the second year of the scholarship program. The application deadline is April 30. To enter for the scholarship, students need to submit a 1 page essay about a work or volunteer experience. Opportunities to Connect w/ New Students

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs' Student Success Leadership Council, is offering two opportunities for current students to connect with prospective and newly admitted students.

Peer2Peer (P2P) encourages current University of Maryland students to assist with recruitment efforts in areas such as Prince George's County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Washington D.C. We are seeking enthusiastic students interested in attending campus events and/or going on the road with Admissions to attend college fairs, panels, and workshops. P2P ambassadors may also be selected to host prospective admitted students for our overnight stay program.

MentorMe mentors are current UMD students who can be paired with incoming first-year students to aid their transition to the University of Maryland. Mentors are charged with the responsibility of giving new incoming students their first personal connection to UMD.

New Help Center Workshop

The Empathy Speaker’s Bureau is a new Help Center workshop covering empathy and basic helping skills to be presented to your group/organization by trained volunteers. 

The hour long presentation aims to increase awareness of empathy and the ways it manifests in communication, improve active listening and helping skills, and increase comfort and confidence in providing empathetic support to others.

We believe that this program is applicable to a wide range of personal and professional settings, covering topics like providing support to friends, navigating conflict, and referring people to resources.

Petey Greene Program at UMD GBM: COVID-19 and Its Impact on Incarcerate Individuals with Guest Speaker!

Join the Petey Greene Program at UMD for our general body meeting on Thursday, March 11th from 6-7pm where we will be discussing the impact of the the COVID-19 pandemic on incarcerated individuals and the functioning of prisons/jails. Claire Glenn, a Prince George's County public defender, will join us as a guest speaker to share about her involvement in Gasping for Justice, a campaign that sought to highlight the COVID-19 outbreak that occurred in Prince George's County Correctional Facility last year, and how the pandemic is impacting her work and her clients. We will also be discussing things such as COVID-19 outbreaks in prisons and jails nationally, 23 hour lockdowns, lack of PPE, vaccination plans, and more.

Writers' House Extended Application Deadline is March 10!

Jiménez-Porter Writers' House is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 academic year.

·Live together, forming a vibrant literary community in centrally located, fully air-conditioned Queen Anne’s Hall. Amenities at Queen Anne's include a Production Lab within the residence hall with free printing for Writers' House students, and a poetry library/quiet study area.

·Major in all fields, may be transfers or moving in from off-campus, and may be freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors,

·Participate in a myriad of literary activities including:

    o publication of Stylus, our on-campus literary journal,

    o meetings with Writers Here and Now visiting authors,

    o writing workshops available in poetry, prose, screenwriting, spoken word, and publication

Terp Thon 2021 this Saturday!

This Saturday, March 6th from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM we will be hosting our Dance Marathon, which is the culmination of our year-long efforts for patients and families at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Throughout the day we plan to have performances, exclusive videos from Children’s National Hospital, interviews with our Miracle Kids, and interactive games and activities.

The Working While Black Career Series is a series of virtual workshops offered by The University Career Center. The workshops are designed to prepare students and graduates for challenges and racial bias that are encountered more typically by Black people than by others.

The series will include speakers and resources to prepare students to thrive in professional spaces, navigate challenges, and explore whether potential employers value and embrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
