Alternative Spring Break Program | Participant Application Now Open

What does student social justice work look like in a world where our campus boundaries seem to be the limit of our reach? How do we connect meaningfully and sustainably with one another in an in-person environment? If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, Alternative Spring Break programs might be the perfect fit for you.

This Spring, Alternative Breaks has returned to in-person experiences, focusing on empowering students to learn in community with one another and take action toward just causes.  The Alternative Breaks Program will consist of a week-long experience over spring break, where each team will be diving deeply into a particular social issue area by evaluating resources together, engaging with the topic in individual and global contexts, and seeking an active role in social justice by fostering relationships with community partners on-site. Participants will engage with community partners through direct service to turn their knowledge into safe, responsible, and sustainable action. Issue areas will include Environmental Conservation, Education, Ability, Socioeconomic Equity, Health and Wellness, and Food Insecurity. Student Leaders will be diving deep into a specific aspect of their issue area as they lead these experiences.

These week-long experiences will take place over the course of spring break, from Saturday, March 19th, 2022 to Saturday, March 26th, 2022. Students will also need to attend pre-experience meetings to learn about their topic and prepare for their experience. Participant applications will close Tuesday, February 15, 2022! If you have any questions or need more information, email alternativebreaks@umd.edu, or check out our website at alternativebreaks.umd.edu
