Second Look Fair Spring 2021

Preparations are underway for the Second Look Fair 2021! To ensure the safety of our community, this year’s Second Look Fair will take place online. In this virtual setting, students will have the opportunity to learn about student organizations and campus resources through an engaging and informative website. The Second Look Fair will take place the first week of February. Unlike the First Look Fair, the Second Look Fair will take place over multiple days with organizations being invited to participate on a specific day based on their category.

The Second Look Fair will feature a live component as well as a passive component for the event (similar to the First Look Fair). For the live component, student organizations and departments will be spread out over different days based on their organization’s category. Departments will select their category during the event registration. The registration form will open on January 6, 2021.

Only departments with TerpLink pages will be able to participate in the live event. If you do not have a TerpLink Page, please email Ashley Venneman at venneman@umd.edu and we will create a TerpLink page for you to be able to participate in the live event.

The passive portion will mirror the First Look Fair website. Information about submitting 90-second videos will be announced in January. This can be the same video you submitted for First Look Fair, but we will need you to re-submit it through our Second Look Fair form.

2021 Maryland Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester, and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment and other competitive opportunities.

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for an MSS award: if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline; if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline; and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2021. All academic majors are eligible.

CORRECTED - Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2021 awards will be Sunday, February 14, 2021. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

A presentation about the MSS program is available on our website as well as on ELMS, along with presentations about additional summer research opportunities - for ELMS access please click here to complete a brief questionnaire

UMD Brain Exercise Initiative

Virtual Volunteer Opportunity (for Pre-med students)

Looking for a way to help your community during the pandemic? Interested in neuroscience and helping others?

The Brain Exercise Initiative is a student-run non-profit organization that uses math, reading, and writing as a form of cognitive development for the elderly. It is found that simple math exercises and reading for just 30 minutes a day can have a positive impact on memory for those with Alzheimer's. We currently have chapters at 50 universities including UCLA, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Notre Dame, Brown, and numerous others. We go to retirement homes for about 30-45 minutes a day and do simple math (addition, subtraction, etc), read aloud, and writing exercises with the seniors.

We are currently looking for volunteers to be a part of our non-profit. As a volunteer, you would virtually meet with the seniors at retirement homes and hold these exercises with them. If you have an interest in neuroscience and Alzheimer’s and enjoy volunteering with elders, we encourage you to apply! We would love to have committed people on our team. Applications are due on Friday, December 18th. Apply here: ter.ps/bei2020

You can also visit our website at www.brainexerciseinitiative.com to find out more. If you have any questions please contact us at umd.bei@gmail.com. Thank you!
