Student Health Advisory Committee Application Now Open!

Applications to join the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) for the 2021-2022 school year are now open! SHAC serves as the student voice at the University Health Center (UHC). SHAC
contributes to quality management, conducts outreach and programming, and also engages in advocacy and activism to support student health and wellness. Past initiatives have included the distribution of free oral hygiene kits at the campus pantry, virtual study halls, and messaging to promote compliance with the 4Maryland guidelines. We are proud to be a multidisciplinary student team that is open to both undergraduates (of any major) and graduate students. You can submit your application anytime before 11:59PM on March 5th! Become a Violence Intervention Ambassador

The VIA program is a 10 hour, 3 session virtual training that will equip students with tools to recognize, respond to, and prevent power-based violence on our campus, and in our world. The training will cover topics including interpersonal and systemic violence, bystander intervention, supporting a survivor, social change, student activism, and self-care.

Completion of the VIA program will provide students with a VIA Certification, volunteer and leadership opportunities with CARE, unique continuing education opportunities and events, professional development, and intervention skills and a community of students passionate about this issue.

Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen with international interests? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000! In the last 2 ½ years, 80 UMD students have won Gilman Scholarships, winning a total of $256,000!

The deadline to apply for Gilman Scholarships for SUMMER AND FALL 2021 is March 2, 2021.

Jimenez-Porter Literary Prize CONTEST 2020

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: MONDAY, FEB 15,2021, by 11:59pm

What:

The Jimenez-Porter Writers’ House is proud to award the sixteenth annual Literary Prize for Undergraduate Writing at University of Maryland, College Park.

Awards:

1st place award (1 each in poetry and fiction): $150.00

2nd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction): $100.00

3rd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction): $50.00

How, or Guidelines for Submissions:

  • Poetry submissions must not exceed 3 pages, maximum 1 poem per page. Fiction submissions must not exceed 3000 words.
  • To submit go to www.styluslit.org, click on “Submit,” and choose categories of “Jimenez-Porter Literary Prize” in Prose or Poetry.
  • Do not put your name or contact info on body of work. Work is judged anonymously, by an “outside” judge (i.e. outside of University of Maryland). To be eligible for this contest, you must be an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park, during the 2020-21 academic year.

Terps for Change Spring application is now open!

Terps for Change's application is open and we need your help spreading the world to students who want to get involved!

Terps for Change is committed to connecting the university with the local community through sustained, collaborative, and meaningful community service-learning. By exploring the root causes of social issues through critical reflection and meaningful dialogue, we seek to better understand the systemic complexities of these issues and the action steps we can take to address them.

Terps for Change volunteers are required to:
make a minimum commitment of one academic semester
volunteer at least 2-3 hours per week
attend and actively engage in weekly dialogue events that focus on critical reflection, deeper understanding of service-learning, and movement towards social change
We have over 11 community partners to work with this semester and many options for dialogues to make sure these experiences are meaningful and fit into your students' busy schedules.
