Join UMD Strive!

Interested in helping provide support and a community to youth living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)? Join UMD STRIVE and become a mentor! STRIVE stands for Sickle cell Teens, Raising awareness, Initiating change, Voicing opinions, and Empowering themselves. STRIVE’s mentors work towards creating actionable programs, providing social support services, and embodying the role of an advocate to youth aged 11-18 years old living with sickle cell disease. UMD STRIVE partners with Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC to effectively meet youth needs. Through communicating with the youth’s doctors, social workers, and nurse practitioners, we orient program direction and adjust program curriculum to meet their needs. SCD affects about 100,000 Americans, and 1 in 365 African Americans, shortens life expectancy significantly, and causes many health complications and pain crises. Teens living with SCD are paired with our mentors for individualized support and guidance through weekly community Zoom calls and tutoring sessions. Most youth living with sickle cell disease participate for the duration of their middle and high school years, and as a result, build meaningful and long-lasting relationships with their mentors. If interested or if you have any questions email dc@nextstep.org! We’d love to have you join our team this Fall.

Doctors Without Borders at UMD!

Doctors Without Borders is coming to UMD as a student chapter and we are recruiting for members!

Doctors Without Borders has grown into a medical movement of more than 30,000 doctors, nurses, logisticians, and administrators. They treat patients in some of the most remote and dangerous places in the world. In more than 70 countries, they’re saving lives threatened by violence, disease, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, and catastrophic events.

Their commitment is to provide the best care possible to every patient and their independence and neutrality allow them to go where many other organizations can’t or won’t.

Global health initiatives require a collective effort from people in a variety of disciplines. Doctors Without Borders goes far beyond the medical personnel. The vast majority of people who work for Doctors Without Borders are not medical-related at all. There are many jobs related to simply managing the organization, marketing, and being a cultural liaison for local people that the doctors interact with. Our chapter mirrors this diversity.

At UMD, our student chapter is passionate about becoming a part of a vital movement — a mission that seeks to provide urgent medical care to people who need it the most. DWB/MSF UMD has 2 fundamental goals: support the work of DWB/MSF through advocacy and awareness focused events, and practice what we preach through volunteering in our community.

Join us and help Doctors without Borders by sharing their work, their challenges, their stories, and their fierce commitment!

Connected Diaspora: Central American Visuality in the Age of Social Media casts light on a new generation of artists who visually reflect on U.S Central American lives and experiences in the era of social media. These new voices from the Central American diaspora have built a creative community that transcends state lines and borders.

Their practices range from delicate ceramic sculptures to large scale paintings to digital art—exploring images of displacement, war, and trauma. Contemplations on everyday life, nature, and architecture, coupled with insights on invisibility and empowerment, are all manifested in this visual assembly. Central Americans make up the third largest U.S Latinx group—a statistic that is not equally reflected when referencing Latinx art. Beyond news articles, Central Americans in the diaspora are a creative force leading the way to a more expansive discourse on Latinx Art.
